Red Thread: A Residency shared by Jo Watson [mid-wife, Red Thread] and Zsuzsi Soboslay [BodyEcology—mentor/facilitator]
Birth, being born, remembering birth, is a subject that is relevant to us all—but our culture relegates it to such a small part of our overall physical, psychic and spiritual lives.
The Red Thread project seeks to weave the shared threads of our bio-intelligence in a life-affirming process, engaging movement, stories, bodywork and dance. “One thread can be woven with other threads to make a rope stronger than the sum of its parts. “
The purpose of our inaugural workshop at Playing Field Studio was to lay the foundation of an embodiment practice specifically of benefit to pregnant and post-partum women. To do this, we discovered we had to look at the long-term effects of postpartum care with women who have already given birth. This gave us a framework for the requirements of care for new mothers, carers and parents. The embodiment of men as fathers/carers, and of medical professionals, also came into the equation.
Between us, we shared knowledge from our professional skills—midwifery, nursing, Shiatsu, therapy, belly-dance, nutrition, and performance.
Our worked touches on the foundation of care and assisting in life transition and threshold experiences.
The long term goals of our work is to create a shared movement process that gives fluidity, balance, pelvic embodiment and an understanding of how to work with change. Carers, partners, midwives and birth attendants can also acquire grounding, sensitivity and embodiment skills, and a helpful language around these experiences.
